Data with a Creative Commons license?
Sharing data through a Creative Commons license: what does it mean?
Licenses like Creative Commons, GNU and MIT are used when a rightsholder wants to assert his intellectual property right, but allow others to use his work. For this purpose, the Creative Commons initiative has created a number of licenses that give different degrees of freedom to users. These different types of licenses are explained at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/. On this website, you can use two questions to find the license that best suits your purpose:
- May third parties share derivative works of your work?
- May third parties use your work for commercial purposes?
Creative Commons licenses are widely used for open-source software and data, with the goal of encouraging users to collaborate on projects and making certain knowledge more available.
